Part Time Ceramic Studio Assistant

Jennifer Spring Ceramics is seeking a part time Ceramic Studio Assistant to support plaster mold making and slipcasting in a small batch ceramic studio based in Redmond, Washington. Jennifer creates hand carved modern ceramics including everyday functional pieces such as mugs, vases, and planters that are produced and shipped in six week cycles.


This role is ideal for someone who finds joy in working with clay has an eye for design and clean finishes and is interested in growing their skills in ceramics potentially as a long term career path.


Position Overview


This position involves assisting with the full ceramic making process from start to finish. Some weeks will require sequential process driven work such as mold making and slipcasting while other weeks will focus on glazing, sanding, packing, and shipping orders. Training will be provided particularly in plaster mold making and slipcasting techniques.

 

  • Hours: 5 to 10 hours per week

  • Schedule: Flexible with increased hours during production and shipping weeks

  • Contract: Initial 6 month contract with strong potential for growth

  • Compensation: $25 per hour

 

Responsibilities


• Assist with plaster mold making with training provided
• Support slipcasting processes including:

  1. Mixing and preparing slip

  2. Filling draining releasing, cleaning and properly storing molds

  3. Cleaning and finishing greenware

  4. Attaching handles and refining details

  5. Recycling slip and mixing colored slips

• Maintaining a clean and organized studio environment

•Packing and shipping orders every six weeks

•Glazing, sanding, and preparing pieces for shipment


Preferred Qualifications


• Some prior ceramics experience preferred, understanding of the clay stages and making process
• Slipcasting experience not required and will be taught
• Strong attention to detail and steady hand as greenware is fragile
• Appreciation for modern design and clean finishes that align with Jennifer’s work
• Comfortable working carefully and methodically through sequential processes
• Creative mindset and enthusiasm for learning

 

Bonus Skills:
• Experience with or interest in learning 3D printing particularly for mold creation

 

Studio Environment


The studio is located adjacent to Jennifer’s home in Redmond so availability is limited to weekday hours. In addition to work hours the assistant will have access to studio equipment for personal projects including a wheel, slab roller and slipcasting molds.
 

This is a relaxed creative studio environment with good music, a cuddly dog, and a shared love of clay. Jennifer is passionate about teaching her process and hopes to work alongside someone who is excited to grow, learn, and contribute to a thriving small business.
